Kenya: County Bans Food Hawking

Public health office in Embu town has banned food hawking businesses to prevent cholera outbreak in the area. Jackson Njeru, Public health Officer, said the move is aimed at stopping the spread of the diseases from the neighbouring counties whic have recorded the outrank. He was speaking at his office on Thursday after the launch of the Malezi bora week where mothers and children below the age of five are given accelerated health services.Njeru said his office crackdown on those not following the ban within Embu town to end food hawking. He said fodd hawking is a major contributor to the spread of the disease. Njeru said that hawking of samosa, sausages, smokies, roasted maize, mandazis boiled maize, porridge, tea in construction sites among others will land the hawkers in jail. He said the office has also banned drinking of wine and spirit at the points of sale Njeru said that those found contravening the liquor licenses laws will have their businesses closed and license cancelled. He said violation of law has in the past contributed to sale of killer brews in the outlets.
