After the hue and cry over the presence of high lead content and monosodium glutamate (MSG) in Maggi, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has now directed the State government to test the various brands of energy drinks. State FSSAI Deputy Director H.S. Shivakumar told The Hindu that the FSSAI had sent a circular to the State government on Thursday to collect samples of 18 brands of energy drinks sold in the State to test them for various parameters, including high fat, sugar and salt. He said the results of all the other brands of noodles that had been tested for lead content and MSG were expected on Friday. “We now have the responsibility of testing the energy drinks. We will start collecting samples from Friday,” he said. The FSSAI had on June 12 set up an 11-member expert group to advise the authority on the health risks associated with the intake of junk food that are high in fat, sugar and salt, and stipulate regulatory limits.
