Warns officials not to ignore Congress workers seeking grievance redressal CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, has directed the officials to repair the roads of Gurgaon city within six months. He was addressing a meeting of Congress workers of Gurgaon and Faridabad Lok Sabha constituencies at Gurgaon over the weekend. He said a Central University would be opened at Mahendergarh and a Defence University would be set up at Gurgaon. A Sainik School would be opened in the Rewari district.

Local residents are, however, pained to see how mercilessly the greenery of the city is being murdered. Pune, August 19 In a major relief to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the Union government on Tuesday approved Rs 511 crore additional funds for roadwork, including BRTS, being implemented under JNNURM. Of this, the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) roads get Rs 165 crore though there are only about 50 days to go for its inaugural day. "The Union government has approved the revised estimation proposal of the PMC with additional funds of Rs 511 crore,' Mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale told The Indian Express from Delhi.
DH News Service, Kolar: An action plan to identify and implement various projects for an amount of Rs 551.63 lakh, released under the SFC scheme, was passed unanimously by the members of the Kolar City Municipal Council, at a special meeting organised here on Tuesday. The action plan was created, at the special meeting, which was presided by CMC President Nazeer Ahmad. On the occasion, CMC member S R Muraligowda urged the meeting to earmark an amount of Rs 35 lakh separately for the CMC staff members and the pourakarmikas towards their salaries.
Mumbai, August 9 Finding an ecological solution to reuse polythene and plastic waste, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation laid a 100-metre stretch of road at Dadar using plastic and asphalt. This stretch on Prof V S Agashe Road near the Kohinoor Technical Institute in Dadarwas laid by the civic body's Road department with the help of the Indian Centre for Plastics in the Environment (ICPE) . The BMC will test its sustainability for a year and then decide whether to lay an entire stretch of road using waste plastic.
About 10 lakh inhabitants of six upazilas in Patuakhali district are suffering as half of the 150 km roads connecting the areas is in a deplorable condition. Large potholes on those roads cause nuisance for passengers as buses, loaded trucks and others vehicles often get stuck there while the situation worsens in the monsoon season with rainwater gathering in the holes. Patients become the worst sufferers on the dilapidated roads.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has embarked on a grand project of four- and/or six-laning of the existing roads to a target of 14,000 km, especially the east-west and north-south corridors. This is a good thing because the country needs proper roads for its development and road construction provides employment. This aspect of development, nevertheless, is also harmful if not managed carefully, because road development requires the basic ingredient of land. People may be displaced or otherwise adversely affected due to land acquisition. (Letters)
