Proposal to set up more air quality monitoring stations
Aiming to monitor the ambient air quality situation of the State, the Pollution Control Board, Assam has submitted a proposal to the Central Pollution Control Board for installation of 24 new stations, under National Air Quality Monitoring Programme, (NAMP) covering all the district head quarters, including four locations of Special Industrial interest. PCBA already has 11stations to monitor ambient air quality in the state, including four in Guwahati, data from which is being collated into a comprehensive format.

Majuli may miss place in Heritage List
Confusion marks the fate of India's proposal to include endangered Majuli Island in World Heritage Site List, with the 32nd session of the World Heritage Committee, winding up inscription of new sites yesterday. At least 19 cultural sites and eight natural sites were added this year.

Govt toying with idea of exploiting Jiajuri silica reserve
The Centre has asked the Ministry of Mines to prepare a Techno-Economic Feasibility Report in consultation with the Assam Government to exploit the huge reserves of silica sand reserves at Jiajuri in Nagaon district. Following encouraging exploration reports it has been decided that a glass industry would be set up in the region using the silica sand either by Government of Assam or in joint venture with private participation, sources said.

Vety camps to curb bird-flu conclude at Goalpara dist
A training camp to train up veterinary doctors, field assistants and Rapid Response Team members of all the veterinary dispensaries of Goalpara district on bird-flu ended at Goalpara on July 4, said Veterinary Officer of the district Dr K K Dutta. The Government of India-sponsored training camp was joined by three experts from the Khanapara-based North Eastern Regional Disease Diagnosis Laboratory as resource persons.

RTI compels Dhubri ASEB to become consumer friendly
Enquiry and complaint are two chronic problems which plague divisional and subdivisional offices of the Assam State Electricity Board all over the State. Annoyed by frequent ringing of the telephone, most instruments in the complaint rooms of the ASEB offices remain uncradled. This is done just to avoid complaints. But after implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005, ASEB's ploy to avoid complaints suffered a serious setback.

Stop tobacco centre
Deepsikha Cancer Care Foundation, an NGO working exclusively for cancer patients, has taken the initiative to make the common masses aware about the abuse of tobacco and its harmful effects. With this aim in view, it has opened its first branch of stop tobacco centre in the Deomornoi community health centre recently. The centre aims to provide information, awareness and support to people willing to quit tobacco.
