The Meghalaya Government has asked the Centre to take special care for uplift of the health sector in the Northeastern States as the services were far from "satisfactory'. At a meeting recently, Meghalaya Chief Minister Donkupar Roy apprised Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss of the state of health sector in his State, saying that it was far from satisfactory. Roy requested Ramadoss to give adequate fund to improve the vital sector.

Assam Governor Shiv Charan Mathur who assumed charge today expressed reservations over the proposed mega hydro-power projects in Arunachal Pradesh, saying that dam-induced damages like flood and adverse environmental impacts needed to be assessed properly. "I am aware of Assam's concerns over the dams and I feel there is no need to construct mega dams. Small hydel projects on the tributaries of the Brahmaputra and Barak should serve our purpose,' he said while addressing his first press conference.
The Meghalaya government today admitted a nexus between school managing committees and distributors of foodgrain which has badly affected implementation of the Mid-day Meal Scheme (MDM). The government made the admission after a review meeting of the scheme in north-eastern states with Central Government officials here. Parliamentary Secretary Mass and Elementary Education Ampareen Lyngdoh told the media that certain managing committees and distributors were in nexus that resulted in distribution of poor quality foodgrain in schools under the scheme.
"As per report in India two persons suffer from Tuberculosis in a minute due to infected cough. And such a patient infects 10 to 15 persons a year. To prevent this we have been taking necessary measures, providing adequate treatment and medicines.' This was stated by Dr Pranati Saikia while addressing an awareness programme on TB organised on the Tezpur Jail premises. Taking part in the programme as a distinguished guest, the noted doctor further dwelt on the ways to combat tuberculosis (TB).
In view of devastating floods affecting Lakhimpur district and nearby areas in Assam, the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd (NEDFi) with the help of Gramin Mahila Vikash Kendra, a leading NEDFi assisted NGO of the district, organised three camps in three different locations with close association of the district administration. The Deputy Commissioner of the district, Jayanta Nalikar also attended one of the three camps. Bleaching powder, medicines, tarpaulin sheets, chira, gur, clothes were distributed among the inmates of the three camps.
