The authors of the recently completed Comprehensive Assessment of Water Management in Agriculture (CA) concluded that there are sufficient water resources to produce food for a growing population but that trends in consumption, production and environmental patterns, if continued, will lead to water crises in many parts of the world.

Going green: CIL plans to earn carbon credits
Looks For Partner To Set Up VAM Projects
COAL India (CIL) is exploring ways to earn carbon credits from its mining operations. It is looking to set up projects that involve capturing ventilation air methane (VAM) from coal blocks. This is expected to allow CIL to earn carbon credits. To this effect, CIL is now looking for a suitable collaborator to develop such VAM projects.

UN launches independent review of climate panel
The United Nations launched an independent review of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which has come under much criticism in the recent months.
The decision was announced by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and IPCC chair Rajendra Pachauri in the wake of a report by the body which erroneously claimed that Himalayan glaciers would melt away by 2035.

Iffco gets Rs 4 cr from carbon credits sale to Spain
IT IS the first time in the fertiliser sector that a company has sold carbon credits. The Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (Iffco), the world’s largest manufacturer and marketer of processed fertilisers in cooperative sector, made around Rs 4 crore from sale of its carbon credits to Spain.

virtual blackout is expected in the city on March 27 for one hour duration as part of the Earth Hour initiative as all nonessential lights will be switched off. European Commission sets strategy for global action post Copenhagen
The European Commission today proposed that the European Union continue to press for a “robust and legally binding global agreement that involves all countries in real climate action” and begin implementing last December's Copenhagen Accord by providing financial assistance to developing countries. However, it said that the world might not be able to reach a global deal until 2011.
