Common treatment

Mumbai-based Maridi Ecotherm Systems has signed up with two hospital associations in Bangalore for hospital waste management (HWM) project at a cost of Rs 3.50 per bed. The proposal is currently awaiting the clearance of the state pollution control board. The firm's five-crore plant on about two hectares, about 50 km outside the city, has gas-fired double chambered incineration, with a wet-scrubbing air-filtration system. The water from the scrubbers will undergo sand filtration, chlorination and carbon media filtration before being used for gardening purposes. Pathological wastes will be incinerated, while other wastes including plastics will go into a five tonnes per day microwave, which has a disinfection chamber and built-in shredder. Shredded plastics will then be sold.
