J K Paper mills

GRP rated J K Paper Mills (jkpm) owned by JKCorp. as the best among the companies rated. Located in Jaykaypur town of Raygada district, Orissa, the mill scored much higher than most others on corporate policy and management systems. Even before grp had been initiated, jkpm had a comprehensive environmental policy addressing issues like procurement of raw material from farm forestry, adoption of cleaner technology and processes, and disposal of waste, among other things. It was at that time the only company from the paper and pulp industry with an iso 14001 certificate which is given for environmental system management.

In the past one year, the company has further reduced its dependence on government forests, moving to social and farm forestry. Earlier, 45 per cent of its requirement of wood was met from farm forestry. This has now increased to about 67 per cent. In the last one year it has distributed approximately 10 million seedlings.

A new process called the Replacement Displacement Heating pulping has reduced the water consumption from 240-260 cubic metre (cum) per tonne of paper to 200 cum per tonne of paper in 1998-1999 further decreasing to 160 cum per tonne of paper in 1999-2000.

It is now phasing out production of coloured varieties of paper, moving away from use of coloured dyes.
