Silent protest

On August 1, 1999, social activist Anna Hazare began a maun vrat (silent fast) at Ralegan Siddhi in Maharashtra against the delay in action against officials allegedly involved in the Rs 32.66 crore drought scandal. He also alleged that there has been a cover-up at the ministry level on the malpractices by officials in the soil conservation department in Ahmednagar district.

Hazare said that he had sent reminders to the chief minister Narayan Rane and other officials about his decision to go on the fast. He had threatened to go on an indefinite fast from August 9 if the state government failed to initiate proceedings against those guilty.
