Toxic water

despite the hue and cry raised by the Bangladesh media about the arsenic contamination of drinking water, around 20 million people are likely to be still consuming tainted water.

This was stated in the British Geological Survey report of 1999. However, this figure is disputed by the Dhaka Community Hospital which says that 75 million people are drinking or are at risk of drinking arsenic contaminated water.

According to Shitbosh Roy of the Dhaka Community Hospital, who has carried out research on the issue, 52 of the country's 64 districts are affected by arsenic levels in excess of 0.01 milligrammes per litre (mg/l) which is the World Health Organisation's minimum acceptable level.
