Caught vulnerable

Turkmenistan is trying to cash in on Russia's and Ukraine's need for its gas during the severe winter. It has stopped gas supplies to the two countries, saying it wants to negotiate a new price. "The gas pressure gauge at Daryalyk compressor station (DCS)stands at zero mark now,' said a Turkmenistan foreign office press statement recently.

DCS is the starting point of the Central-Asia-Centre pipeline system. Turkmenistan conducted negotiations with Russia on December 31, 2004. "The two sides agreed that the Turkmen proposal will be considered and a Russian delegation will visit Ashgabat soon for coordinating the new price for gas delivery,' the statement said. Gas supply to Ukraine was stopped because it discontinued negotiations. "Turkmenistan is ready to negotiate with Ukraine's new management to coordinate the new delivery price of gas,' it added.
