Malaysian Greens see red

The 3-part environmental impact assessment of the ambitious Bakun hydroelectric dam project has angered the Greens. In late February, Ekran Bhd, the company in charge of the project, announced that the assessment would be submitted in stages to Malaysia's Department of Environment by March-end. The first report regarding the reservoir collecting water from the Rejang river and its tributaries was submitted last week. The other 2 are for power transmission lines, including the world's longest underwater power cable from Borneo to Malaysia.

The Malaysian environmental group, Sahabat Alam, has voiced its objection to Ekran's 3-part environmental assessment, opining that since they are interlinked, they should be presented as a whole.
