UNITED NATIONS

The United Nations Development Programme and the African Development Bank have launched a US $24 million programme to help the Government of Cameroon combat poverty and improve opportunities for women and unemployed youth living in northern parts of the country. The project will provide credit and training for women's groups and small-scale enterprises, including agriculture activities and the manufacture of handicrafts. Community development initiatives, such as the construction of rural roads to help market and distribute local products and crops, will also be undertaken.

India has signed the United Nations Convention Against Torture, a move that has been welcomed by Amnesty international. A external affairs ministry statement stated that once the convention is ratified, India will become a party to all the six core conventions on human rights. The Amnesty International, while expressing its appreciation has also called for legislative changes to implement the provisions of the convention.
