CAG pulls up DAE

the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (cag) has pulled up the Department of Atomic Energy (dae) for sluggish execution of its nuclear power projects. The cag says the slow pace will make it "impossible' for the department to accomplish its target of adding 7,880 megawatts of energy by the end of 2000.

In a strongly-worded statement, the report said the dae has not been able to complete even a single plant between 1997 and March 1998. Thus, no nuclear power was added in the 1997-98 period though the target was 2,645 mw.

The report also added that there was a disparity in the procurement of material and other inputs such as civil works, equipment and other infrastructure. It also pinpointed errors in the working of other science departments, notably the Department of Space and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
