Close to closure

travancore Titanium Products ( ttp ) Ltd, long embroiled in a tussle with the Kerala State Pollution Control Board ( kspcb ), may face closure with the State Water Appellate Authority dismissing two of its appeals. The appeals were submitted by ttf with regard to a case on pollution of the sea caused by the discharge of effluents. The issue of pollution of the sea which caused damage to fish and flora close to the shore, came up in the 70s. The National Institute of Oceano-graphy directed the company in 1980 to build a pipeline to carry the effluents 750 m into the sea from the shore, at a depth of 18 m.

The Authority, chaired by the state law Secretary, C Khalid, dismissed the stay petition filed by the ttp and another appeal against the kspcb 's rejection of an application for renewal of consent to discharge the effluents. ttp, one of Kerala's few profit-making public sector undertakings, had earlier failed to comply with the directions issued by the board and the authority for implementing temporary and permanent pollution control measures.
