Garbage power

A Japanese company has developed a system that is capable of generating almost twice as much energy from compressed pellets of pulverised household waste as all other systems currently available. The Electric Power Development (EPD) company of Japan says its experimental power plant in Kitakyushu has a generating efficiency of over 35 per cent, far better than the 20 per cent achieved by other waste-burning plants and it is as good as an oil-fired plant. EPD's trick is to use sand as the heat-exchanger substance, using it to create steam and drive a turbine to generate power.
