Manual for implementation of sustainability schemes under National Rural Drinking Water Programme

The revised National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) Guidelines issued by Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission, Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation has focus on adequate water supply in quantity and quality, to each rural household on a sustainable basis. Despite the impressive coverage of provision of safe drinking water facilities in the rural areas, there is considerable gap between infrastructure created and service available at the household level. The issue of sustainability of source and system for ensuring supply of potable water are cited as the two major constraints in achieving the national goal of providing drinking water to all rural population. This is primarily due to rapid depletion of ground water because of over exploitation and lack of community involvement in operation and maintenance of rural water supply schemes.
