LANDING IN TROUBLE

The World Wide Fund for Nature-India (wwf-i) brought to the attention of the Delhi High Court that the Centre had denotified large areas in the national parks and sanctuaries violating the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, endangering animals. The wwf-i asked the court to immediately stop any mining activities in the five-km radius of these parks and sanctuaries. The wwf-i said that 1,600 ha of land bearing 40,000 trees in the Madhav National Park in Madhya Pradesh had been allotted for an irrigation project.
