Drinking risk

drinking water in south Delhi is severely contaminated, warn scientists at the All India Institute of Medical sciences ( aiims ). They have found that despite using chlorine for disinfection, there are alarming pervalence of disease-causing amoeba, bacteria, parasites, and larvae of insects in drinking water.

Sarman Singh at the department of laboratory medicine, aiims , says that the presence of amoeba in more than 90 per cent of examined cases is disturbing as they may cause several eye and brain diseases. The study shows high prevalence of various strains of mycobacterium , salmonella , and parasites such as hookworm and entamoeba histolytica in such samples. These strains can cause tuberculosis, typhoid, dysentery, and stomach ailments.
