Unhealthy shift

Till the mid 1970s, oils extracted from indigenously grown oilseeds constituted the major chunk of our edible oil consumption. Groundnut oil was the most consumed (about 53 per cent), followed by mustard oil (25 per cent) and cottonseed oil (around 9 per cent). Palm, soyabean and sunflower oils made up just 4 per cent of the total edible oil consumption. The scenario has completely changed today. Palm oil makes up 38 per cent of our edible oil consumption, while soyabean oil makes up 21 per cent of the share. These oils are the cheapest oils in the international market.
