Prime minister Manmohan Singh has directed the constitution of a Task Force to review the management of tiger reserves in the country. The team will be headed by Sunita Narain, director, Centre for Science and Environment. It has been entrusted with suggesting ways to improve tiger conservation and the methodology of assessing the animal's population.
The government will also seek its advice for evolving a new wildlife management paradigm that shares conservation concerns with the public. Among other things, the team will make suggestions about incentivising people for conservation work. It has to submit its report within three months. Other task force members are H S Pawar, former chief of Project Tiger and Wild Life Institute of India; Madhav Gadgil, member, National Board of Wildlife; Valmik Thapar, member, National Board of Wildlife, and Samar Singh, member, National Board of Wildlife.
