CPCB Report on performance assessment of railway stations in compliance to the National Green Tribunal order in O.A. No. 141/2014 in the matter of Saloni Singh & Others Vs Union of India & Others.

The NGT had directed a joint team comprising of CPCB and concerned SPCBs/PCCs to evaluate the performance of major railway stations both in terms of implementation of action plans and compliance to the provisions of the Water Act, Air Act and Environmental Protection Act and Rules framed thereunder especially Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016, Hazardous and other Waste Rules 2016, Bio-Medical Waste Rules 2016, Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules 2016.

The State PCBs/PCCs had to file report through the CPCB in compliance of Section 25 of Water Act 1974 and Section 21 of Air Act 1981 of the railway stations.

Teams comprising of CPCB and concerned SPCBs/PCCs inspected 36 railway stations to evaluate their performance during February-March, 2020. The CPCB received correspondence from railway authorities seeking information regarding categorization of railway stations into red/orange/green category for the purpose of obtaining consents from SPCB/PCC. Information related to pollutionn potentia of railway stations was assessed by Expert Committee of CPCB and railway stations and were categorized into red/orange/green category.
