Chief Minister Digambar Kamat today said that the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) which were not notified and scrapped will die a natural death in wake of the State withdrawing the SEZ Policy. Replying to cut motions tabled by the Opposition in the House, Kamat said that the State had asked these SEZ companies to revert back the land allotted by the government.

ANGUL: Naveen Jindal led Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) has approached the State Energy Department for relocation of its proposed 1320 MW power plant in the district. The Jindal power authorities want the plant to be shifted to Badakerejeng village near its steel plant at Nisha from the originally proposed Boinda.
Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Monday said a high-level committee would be constituted to monitor proper utilisation of land allotted by the government to industrial enterprises. The chief minister, who was in Delhi to meet party president Nitin Gadkari, said the committee would study the profile of the industry, purpose of setting up plant, requirement of land and its proper utilisation.
Mumbai: The BMC and not the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), will undertake the next water supply project for the city. The city will receive 865 million litres daily (mld) once the project is completed, which is expected in a decade. The MMRDA had announced in 2010 that it would develop the Rs 8,500-crore Pinjal water supply project at its cost. The state irrigation department had even granted in-principle approval for the project. But the MMRDA recently informed the department that it was no longer interested in taking up the project as it has been able to tap water from other sources for the metropolitan region.

JAIPUR: In what will be the biggest ever investment in the state, the board members of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) approved the Rajasthan government's proposal to set up the 19th oil refinery of the country in Barmer. "The memorandum of understanding (MoU) to set up the refinery at Barmer will be signed in Jaipur on March 14 in the presence of Union minister of petroleum and natural gas Veerappa Moily," said a delighted state chief minister Ashok Gehlot. Talking to TOI, Gehlot said that the proposed refinery is a landmark achievement for the entire state and it will translate into revolutionary growth. "I immediately called Mr Moily and welcomed the decision," he added.
The Wildlife Society of Orissa (WSO) has asked the ministry of environment to investigate into the Jindal Steel and Power (JSP) plant illegally drawing groundwater for its upcoming power plant in Angul district. JSP is building a 12-million tonne steel plant with a captive power plant of 135 MW. Khirod Singh, a lawyer and farmer in Angul district, pointed out that, “Our tube wells and ponds have all begun to go dry and by mid-March we will not even have drinking water. Last year also we suffered the same fate.”

Large number of farmers and environmentalists will gather at a mega congregation in Mithi Virdi village of Bhavnagar district on Monday to oppose tooth and nail the 6,000 MW nuclear power plant proposed at this coastal site. The congregation comes just a day before the crucial public hearing to be conducted by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) at Navagam (nava) village. On March 5, NPCIL has organized the public hearing on the environment assessment report (EIA) on the first-phase 1,000 MW project that involves setting up of six light water reactors. The report has been prepared by Engineers India Limited (EIL).

PARADIP: To finalise the Posco compensation package, the district administration has called a meeting of Rehabilitation and Peripheral Development Advisory Committee (RPDAC) at Jagatsinghpur on July 8. A notification was issued to all members of RPDAC today asking them to participate, said District Rehabilitation Officer Surjeet Das.
