The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a ban on immersion of idols in rivers. The petitioner had pointed out the pollution caused in river Yamuna due to idol immersion. However, the court was of the view that a ban involved the question of right to religious practice.
Taking a strict view of the increasing pollution in major rivers, the Allahabad High Court has refused permission for immersion of idols in the Ganga and the Yamuna.
