State of the climate in Asia 2023
Asia remained the world’s most disaster-hit region from weather, climate and water-related hazards in 2023. Floods and storms caused the highest number of reported casualties and economic losses, whilst

This is a summary of a report on climate change adaptation research knowledge and capacity gaps in China, commissioned by DFID (UK) and IDRC (Canada) to consider support for a programme of applied research on climate adaptation in Asia.
At present, throughout the world, there exists significant concern about the effects of climatic changes, as climate is one of the main determinants of agricultural production and it might cause variability in agricultural production. In India climate change is expected to make an impact in agriculture, resulting in lower yields of crops.

Dengue—a viral disease that can refer to both dengue fever and the more severe dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF)—swept away records again this past spring as it raged across Brazil, infecting more than 160,000 people and killing more than 100. The reports were similar to those out of Southeast Asia in the summer of 2007, South America the previous spring, and India the fall before that. Although it may not be the most devastating of the mosquito-borne diseases—malaria strikes 10 times more people and yellow fever kills more of its victims—dengue has become a major public health concern for two reasons: the speed with which it is spreading and the escalating seriousness of its complications.

Original Source

biological sciences Frog, out of the well The frog, Odorrana tormota, is the only animal that can manipulate its hearing system to select particular frequencies. It helps the males to call and woo females. The system in frogs is also being used as a model for hearing aids. The rare amphibian may have evolved its hearing talent out of necessity, since its environment is so noisy,
Glaring gaps in Gangotri glacial melt study Science seems to have been the casualty in the study on glacial retreat in Gangotri, source of the Ganga. The Uttarakhand government had commissioned a study to an expert committee in 2006. The committee came out with a report in December 2007, which scientists said was dated and
The paper presents the outcomes of a study conducted to analyse water resources availability and demand in the Mahanadi River Basin in India under climate change conditions. Climate change impact analysis
Jeremy Jackson, director of the Scripps Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation, cites the synergistic effects of habitat destruction, overfishing, ocean warming, increased acidification and massive nutrient runoff as culprits in a grand transformation of once complex ocean ecosystems. Areas that had featured intricate marine food webs with large animals are being converted into simplistic ecosystems dominated by microbes, toxic algal blooms, jellyfish and disease.
Long-term food security is a broad development issue. Food security cannot be achieved without enhancing livelihood options, and the livelihoods of poor communities cannot be improved unless productive resources, such as water, land, forest, rangeland, biodiversity, and the natural environment,
The objectives of this Report are to clarify the latest scientific knowledge in Japan on the impacts of, and adaptation to, climate change, and to present the concept of "wise adaptation' and the direction for future research. The Report presents a summary based on the reviews conducted by the Committee and the working groups comprised of experts from various fields of study.
