Bandhs sponsored by various organisations are affecting tea industry of the State with a cascading effect on the quality of its products. This is when the tea industry here is on the path of resurgence after a several-year-long recession. Vice-chairman of the North Eastern Tea Association (NETA) Bidyananda Barkakoty said that the frequent bandhs called by different organisations are affecting the tea industry severely. In the current month alone, there were three statewide bandhs within the span of a week, he said.
It may sound strange, but is true. Though Guwahati city is severely hit by artificial flood and waterlogging, the irony is that its residents continue to bear the brunt of acute drinking water shortage. With 70 per cent of the city's households still denied the piped water supply network of the government agencies, including the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), many residents have no other option but to rely on water supplied by private tankers.
The people of Assam are likely to get a respite in the current summer season as a power tariff is unlikely with the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) and its subsidiary companies are yet to place its demands to the Assam State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC) and as per the regulations, the Commission will have to give its orders within 120 days from the date of placing of the demands.
The overall flood situation in Lakhimpur district improved today with floodwaters of the Ronganadi, Singara, Dikrong and Kakoi receding to a great extent. However, the fresh announcement of the NEEPCO authorities to release water from the Ronganadi Hydel Power dam has sent alarm bells ringing in the district. Both Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts are cut off from the rest of the State for the fourth day today, as the about nine-metre deep breach in NH-52 at Ganesh Udyan is yet to be repaired.
Manav Sarathi, a voluntary organisation, launched its Greening India programme at Tetelia LP School, Dimoria Block of Kamrup (M) district on the occasion of World Environment Day. Addressing the inaugural function, Dr Manjushree Pathak, president of the organisation, said that the project Greening India is meant for the benefit of rural people of the Dimoria Block and is also designed to create environmental awareness and to promote ecological balance in the area.
The water shortage in Guwahati can no longer be overlooked. The reason for this, according to AK Das, Junior Engineer, PHE, is the old pipelines and the scheme itself. The distribution lines are almost 30 years old. "The amount of water supplied is same but the population has increased manifold and the water is never enough.' Only when the distribution network is improved people of the city can expect to lead a water worry-free life.
