NEEPCO to form advisory group on environment
Faced with increasing opposition in executing power projects in the NE, the NEEPCO has decided to form an "advisory group' to address issues related to environment. Union Minister of State for Power, Jairam Ramesh announced here recently that the NEEPCO would form the advisory group comprising eminent environmentalists drawn from IIT, Guwahati and NEHU. The advisory group would suggest how best to implement projects without causing damage to the fragile environment of the region. It would also help to take the public into confidence with regards to environmental issues.

Concern over rhino killings in Kaziranga
Banajutshna, a nature organisation of Golaghat district has expressed its deep anguish over the ruthless and cold-blooded killing of the rhinos by poachers in the Kaziranga National Park. It is also equally disturbing that killings of rhinos as well as removal of its horns have become a regular feature in the KNP almost every year. It is high time the government of Assam, should publish a white paper on rhino poaching as early as possible. The united effort of the Forest department and public may solve the problem.

Prospects of agriculture (Editorial)
As against scathing attack hurled at Government by the opposition political parties as well as the left allies over galloping inflation in the country, the ruling party at the Centre does not find enough reasons to be so much worried since the weather forecast of meteorological department suggests a near-normal monsoon in the current year that could lead to increased farm production in 2008-09 successively after good harvest of the previous fiscal.

AASU memo to Centre over Assam Oil issue
The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) today despatched a memorandum to the Union Minister of Petroleum and the chairman, Indian Oil Corporation urging them to take urgent action to retain the identity of Assam Oil Division, Digboi Refinery of the Indian Oil Corporation Limited, keeping in view the interest of the people of the region. The AASU stated that the decision to shift the entire marketing operation of Assam Oil Division from Digboi to Guwahati to a new set up has created confusion in the minds of the people of Assam.

Solar power lights up villages in Tripura
Perched on Killa Hill, Tobakla, a remote tribal hamlet in Tripura's South district, now shines in the dark with a non-conventional solar power plant supplying energy under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vaidyutikaran Yojana. A septuagenarian, Bikram Singh Jamatiya is a delighted man today. "My village is remote which can be approached only on foot. We lived in darkness at night. Now it is different,' he told a group of visiting journalists. "Earlier, we saw electric lights only when we went to Udaipur, the district town, which is about 25 km from the village,' he said.

ISRO centre to introduce courses in GU
The North East Space Application Centre (NESAC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has agreed in principle to introduce joint courses in the areas of Atmospheric Physics and Satellite Communication with Gauhati University (GU). The ISRO centre has also proposed to collaborate with GU for design of sensor relevant for monitoring natural resources of the NE region via satellite.
