The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) will stage a Statewide protest on May 3 in protest against the spurt in rhino poaching. Reiterating that a CBI probe be initiated to get to the roots of the rhino poaching, the AASU said that Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain had proved to be totally incompetent in checking rhino deaths and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was turning a blind eye to the developments.

Frequent and unscheduled power cuts for long hours as well as low voltage created havoc for majority of the tea estates of Assam and industry sources said that if the situation does not improve soon, most of the gardens would face serious problems soon. Tea Industry sources told The Assam Tribune today that in recent times, majority of the gardens faced serious problems due to frequent power cuts and in some places of the State, the gardens located in the remote areas faced power cuts for as many as 20 hours in a day.

The Ministry of Power is considering two options including the proposal to construct a bridge over Brahmaputra river connecting Sadiya and Dhola in Assam, as part of the Dibang Multi-purpose Hydroelectric Project. The Ministry of Power has submitted a proposal to the Public Investment Board (PIB) for the Dibang Project in Arunachal Pradesh indicating two alternatives, said Minister DoNER, Mani Shankar Aiyar in a Lok Sabha reply to a question by Dr Arun Kumar Sarma. The first alternative covers external roads and bridges including construction of a bridge over Brahmaputra river.
The farmers of Dhansiri subdivision have been maintaining their families by cultivation of rabi crops. More than 90 per cent people here are mainly dependent on agriculture. The Tezpur anchalik unit of AASU staged a strong protest on Tuesday against serious anomalies in appointment in the health sector by burning effigy of Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and raising black flags against the process in front of the join director's office. The protestors seized appointment letters from five youths hailing from Kamrup district. In a press release issued by the president of Tezpur anchalik AASU, Jan Bora stated that some temporarily appointed malaria home workers and DDT spray workers have been demanding to regularise their posts and moved the court.
In the wake of reports of widespread misuse of the Transport Subsidy Scheme, the Planning Commission is evaluating the scheme afresh. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has clarified today, that it has not released Transport Subsidy Scheme during the current financial year. This fiscal, only Rs 1 crore has been earmarked under the scheme, pending its evaluation by the Planning Commission. This was revealed by Union Minister of State for Industry and Commerce, Ashwani Kumar in a Lok Sabha reply, on Tuesday.
