The challenges to the growth of foreign trade in the Northeast were today highlighted in a meet attended by the Director General of Foreign Trade and members of Federation of Indian Export Organisations and Federation of Industries and Commerce of Northeast Region. Several issues, including extension of special support to exporters and importers in the Northeast were discussed in some detail.
The list of world's richest is never complete today without some Indians among the top. Forbes released yet another list on March 6, 2008 which saw India's Anil Ambani as the biggest wealth creator. As many as four Indians made it to top ten positions in the billionaire club as against just one, Lakshmi Mittal, a year ago. There was a time when the entire Barpeta district was a reservoir of fishes like kawai, magur, rou, barali, etc. All the beels, wastelands and parts of Brahmaputra and its tributaries flowing through the district, were the natural habitat of these fishes. People of Barpeta have a history of consumption of fish. As the production was abundant surpassing the local demand it could have been exported to other parts of the State.

A workshop-cum-training programme on Forect (Conservation) Act for the officials of Border Roads Organization was organised recently at HQ 47 BRTF (GREF) to sensitize and educate the participants on preparations of the proposals for Forest/Environmental clearances for development of border roads.
Cultivation of sugar-free potatoes is bringing good health to the farmers in around 19 villages of Nagaon. Now, this is not because the consumption of the same minimizes their risk of becoming diabetic, but because of the buy-back process in the contact farming system, which is fetching them Rs 6 per kg at a time when the other local potato growers in the State are struggling for a market, where they can get only Rs 3 per kg at bulk selling.
Requesting Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to rescind or replace the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, Early Birds, an NGO from the State, submitted a memorandum to the PMO. The environmental NGO has requested the PM to bring forward-thinking legislations in place of the above Act, which can provide forest usufruct rights, as well as, alternative livelihoods to the forest-dependant poor, without making the mistake of land grants.
While its cultural and spiritual heritage makes it an ideal candidate for acquiring the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its rich biodiversity only adds to that claim. Not many may be aware, but Majuli, one among the largest river islands inhabited the world, possesses a range of animal and plant life that is of considerable significance. The picture once completed by researchers would definitely help it gain more focus in the national and international scene, said a noted environmentalist.
