Dinesh Prasad Goala, Minister of Urban Development and Housing recently announced new projects to be implemented in Barak Valley soon. Goala said that there will be a new water supply scheme worth Rs 8.15 crore in the Lakhipur sub division of Cachar district. There will be storm water drain both in Lakhipur sub division and Hailakandi district worth Rs 7.83 & 9.92 crores respectively. Commercial complexes both in Hailakandi and Lakhipur sub division have been santioned. In Saptagram of Karimganj district there will be a town hall.
The Centre proposes to deploy four Cutter Suction Dredgers (CSD) and a Hydraulic Surface Dredger (HSD) on Brahmaputra river in addition to the ones currently operating. Four more CSD and one HSD units are under construction for deployment in the Brahmaputra River National Waterway, said Union Minister for Shipping, TR Baalu.
Arsenic and flourides are found in the underground water in Barak valley. In order to make underground water free from arsenic and flourides all necessary preventive measure have been adopted by the State government. The PHE Minister Rihon Daimary disclosed the fact while inaugurating Kumbhirgram TE water supply scheme.
Though the Government of India has announced a series of sops to the Tea industry in the Budget for the current financial year, industry sources said that it would be beneficial only if the funds are released on time. The Union Finance Minister, P Chidambaram, in the Budget, announced that an amount of Rs 40 crore would be provided for the special purpose tea fund for re-plantation and rejuvenation of the tea bushes. However, tea industry sources pointed out that the Government's decision would be beneficial for the industry only if the funds are released on time.

A week after declaring Kamalpur subdivision avian flu- free zone, fresh outbreak of the deadly disease has been reported at Mohanpur and its adjacent villages in West Tripura district. The most affected areas were Kalacherra, Mantala, Bijoynagar, Mohinipur, Mohanpur, Ishanpur and Hejamar, close to Bangladesh. "The Bhopal-based High Security Animal Disease Laboratory confirmed the outbreak at Mohanpur where eight chicks died mysteriously recently', said U Vankeswarlu, State's principal secretary of Animal Resource Development (SRD) here on Tuesday.
The Forest department of the State has undertaken an ambitious project of bamboo plantation to strengthen the economic foundation of the State. Talking to mediapersons recently at Nagaon, Rockybul Hussain, Forest Minister told that his department would plant bamboo on 2000 hectares of land around Guwahati through the Bamboo Mission. He also disclosed that to make bamboo-based industry popular, two bamboo museums would be opened, one each at Nagaon and Guwahati.
Acute power shortage has once again gripped the State, causing miseries to the consumers besides hitting trade and industry hard. While insufficient generation of power coupled with a decrepit transmission and distribution (T&D) network has been at the root of the problem, a spurt in theft of tower parts and conductors has made matters worse. According to the ASEB, theft of tower parts and conductors resulted in revenue loss of at least Rs 12 crore between March 29 and April 10 besides disrupting the T&D network.
