WHY WIND ENERGY
India relies heavily on coal-based thermal and hydel power plants for electricity generation, and on wood and crop residues for household energy needs in rural areas. All these are associated with environmental problems, including land degradation, water and air pollution, and depletion of biomass and soil capacity. There is a growing concern over the hazards of local, regional and global emissions from fossil fuel-based power generation.
In this respect, tapping wind energy is the most environment-friendly method of producing electricity. Unlike the conventional coal or oil-fired power plants for large hydel projects, wind turbines have no adverse effects on global environment.
