Farmers allege compensation not enough A group of men is sitting under a grove, playing a game of cards at noon. Around them, thousands of acres of land, mostly arable, lie dotted with small hamlets. Amid speculation that Larsen and Toubro Ltd (L&T) is planning to sell its stake in Dhamra Port Co Ltd (DPCL), an equal joint venture between the engineering giant and Tata Steel Ltd, the Odisha government has ruled out immediate allotment of land for the port's second phase expansion. "Allotment of additional land to DPCL for the second phase development at this stage does not appear tenable. Further claim of additional land by DPCL shall be considered by the state government on the basis of a norm (thumb rule) being formulated,” G Mathi Vathanan, secretary (commerce and transport), Odisha, stated in a letter to Santosh K Mohapatra, chief executive officer (CEO) of DPCL.

Villagers’ protest against shifting of Anakapalle municipality’s garbage dumping yard took a serious turn on Wednesday afternoon when 20 villagers and others supporting them were taken into custody at Achayyapeta under Sundarayyapeta Panchayat, a few kilometres from Anakapalle. Even as the police took the men into custody, women of the village continued their dharna and the municipality’s tractor was not allowed to proceed. The villagers intensified their protest from Tuesday when they gheraoed Municipal Commissioner S. Muralidhara Rao and stopped the municipal vehicles from entering the area marked for the dumping yard. The protest continued on Wednesday and the police took away 20 villagers.

The Chenara minor dam project in state water resources minister Sunil Tatkare’s bastion, Roha in Raigad district, reveals shocking instances of how officials shifted the goal post several times to push it through. The project was inaugurated by deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar in October, 2011. Documents accessed by TOI show the project was initially planned to irrigate 1,440 hectares, but subsequently reduced to 250 hectares when officials realized that permissions would be difficult to get. The dam’s height, which was fixed at 44.20m, was shortened to 28.95m.
