• CAG not given full access to KG-D6 records

  Stating that Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) had not granted full access to KG-D6 block records to Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister M. Veerappa Moily, on Tuesday, told Parliament that CAG had said that since full access to KG-D6 records was pending, the Petroleum Ministry should examine all relevant issues closely and carefully before considering the desirability of any further approvals of capital expenditure. Mr. Moily informed the Raja Sabha in a written reply that RIL had agreed to audit by CAG for block KG-DWN-98/3 for the years 2008-09 to 2011-12 without prejudice to the rights and contentions of the contractor under the contractual provisions. Mr. Moily clarified that CAG had not asked Petroleum Ministry to withhold approvals to RIL.

• Indian monsoon was more intense 6,000 years ago, says study

  Sea-dwelling fossil shells reveal 60,000-year-old link relating to climate change Link dating back to 60,000 years between sea surface temperature of Northeast Indian Ocean (NEIO) and North Atlantic climate oscillations, probably through ocean atmospheric connection, was found by researchers. In a study on oxygen isotopes deposited in fossil shells in the ocean sediment through AMS radiocarbon dating, it was also found that the Indian monsoon was much more intense 6,000-8,000 years ago than the present period. In the study carried out by scientists from CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute here, researchers from the School of Geography Science, Nanjing Normal University and the School of Earth Science and Engineering, Nanjing University, Nanjing, China collaborated in dating the fossils.

• LPG cylinder cap may be raised to 9 a year

  Cabinet will have to clear proposal: Moily The Manmohan Singh government indicated on Tuesday that the cap on the subsidised LPG cylinders would go up from six to nine a household a year. “I think it is likely to go up definitely from six to nine cylinders, and the Cabinet [Committee on Political Affairs] will have to grant its approval to the proposal,” Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Veerappa Moily told journalists at a function here on Tuesday.

• Coal ministry deallocates two more blocks in Odisha

  Continuing its crackdown on non-serious players, the Ministry of Coal deallocated two more coal blocks- Baitarani West and Naini- allotted in Odisha in view of the unsatisfactory progress in development of the coal mines and end-use plants. The deallocation has been effected by the ministry on the basis of recommendations made by the inter-ministerial group (IMG) of the Centre on coal block allocation. The government has also forfeited 50 per cent bank guarantee provided by the allocatees at the time of allotment.

• PDS retailers oppose direct cash subsidy transfer by Centre

  Around 40,000 fair price shops (FPS) across Odisha downed their shutters on Tuesday in protest against Central government’s plan to transfer cash subsidy directly to the FPS consumers. “In response to call given by the All India Fair Price Dealers’ Federation (AIFPDF), all the fair price shops across the state downed their shutters. The control shop owners will stage rally in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday in support of their demands,” said president of Odisha Fair Price Retailers Welfare Association (OFPSRWA), Nagendra Jena.

• Renewable energy potential in state assessed at 11,820 MW

  Renewable energy potential in Odisha has been assessed at 11,820 MW, with solar energy having the highest potential at 10,000 MW among all green energy sources. According to information provided by minister for science & technology Ramesh Chandra Majhi in the state assembly, though, estimates say, renewable energy sources can be tapped to produce a total of 53,820 MW, the generation of 11,820 MW out of this is feasible. The solar photo-voltaic source has the maximum potential at 8,000 MW followed by solar thermal and wind power at 2,000 MW and 910 MW respectively. Similarly it is estimated that bio-mass paddy husk and bio-mass paddy straw can be used to produce 250 MW each.

• India could protect its interests fully at Doha, says government

  The Doha climate talks could not take “ambitious or meaningful decisions” on financing commitments of developed countries, the government on Tuesday said. However, India could protect its interests “fully” and succeeded in bringing the three issues of “Equity, technology-related IPRs (intellectual property rights) and the unilateral measures firmly back on the table,” it said. “Among the key concerns which the conference could not address are those relating to financing commitments of developed countries, sectoral actions and the issue of compensation for loss and damage arising from climate change,” the government said two days after the conclusion of the Doha conference.

• Coal India may get go-ahead to extract CBM from mines

  Coal India (CIL) may be allowed to extract coal-bed methane (CBM) from its vast leasehold mining areas soon, opening new business avenues and boosting revenues for the state-owned coal monopoly. Current rules prohibit coal miners from extracting methane released during the mining process, wasting a valuable natural resource. “We have given in-principle approval to a new policy on coal mine methane. We will soon move a Cabinet note to allow CBM extraction by CIL,” a petroleum ministry official said.

  MARGAO: Violations of parking norms with impunity figured prominently at the meeting of the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) on Tuesday, with members unanimously underlining the need for strict enforcement of parking rules. The meeting rejected a couple of building project files for want of adequate parking. The builders will be asked to come out with a revised plan taking into account parking requirements.
