Govt plans to spend $2 bn on health, education, amenities

In a bid to increase public spending and take counter cyclical measures to beat the downturn, the Government plans to spend around $2 billion towards health, education and urban amenities. Of this, over $700 million will come in the form of grants from European Commission and UK’s Department for International development (DFID).

Govt sets up 22-member authority to rate food

Centre has finally constituted a 22-member regulatory authority that will judge and rate food - right from the kitchens of luxury hotels to the roadside eating joints - according to scientific standards. The authority will finalise the guidelines by March next year and will lay down food standards of the country, including its regulation manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import.

Two children in Bihar die after vaccination

Two children, including an infant, died after being administered vaccines in a Bihar village, health officials and parents said Tuesday.A 20-day-old boy died Monday, a day after he was administered DPT and BCG vaccines in Kamrauli village of Darbhanga district, about 200 km from here.

Meningococcal meningitis claims 193 lives in State

SHILLONG: Meningococcal meningitis has claimed 193 lives in the State this year and there are public concerns that the killer disease is yet to be wiped out from Meghalaya.

Director of Health Services Dr KH Lakiang on Wednesday said only ten meningococcal meningitis deaths had been "medically confirmed" by doctors in government hospitals.

Project to reduce hospital-borne infections

The National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in association with the district administration and the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) will implement a unique SAFE I- Project, said District Collector M Beena at a press conference here on Friday.

The novel project aims at bringing down hospital-borne infections by ensuring safe injection and thereby decreasing iatrogenic diseases.
