Green project
the World Bank-sponsored programme for biodiversity conservation in seven globally-significant areas of the country has taken off with the hiring of field-officers for conducting feasibility analysis of the proposed investments required at the village level. The officers at the village level will train staff to implement and monitor eco development projects. The ministry of environment and forests will be the implementing agency with participation from several non-governmental organisations and scientists.
The project includes conservation of biodiversity in seven protected areas in Buxa tiger reserve, Gir national park and sanctuary, Nagarhole national park, Palamau Tiger reserve, Periyar tiger reserve and Ranthmbore tiger reserve. A loan of us $28 million is being advanced through the International Development Agency, the soft lending arm of the World Bank. The Global Environment Facility will provide an additional grant of us $20 million for the eco development project.
