• NGT asks Centre to fix noise norms for public vehicles

  Vehicles with multi-tone horns and sirens are found to be violating noise pollution rules The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Union government to notify standards for sirens and multi-tone horns used by vehicles including those of Government, police or ambulance within three months. The directions were issued by principal bench of Justice A S Naidu and G K Pandey who felt an urgent need to have source specific noise standards, as there were no standards specified by the Union government with regard to use of horns and sirens in ambulances, government and police vehicles.

• Fresh court notices on BRT corridor

  The Delhi High Court on Monday issued notices to the Delhi Government, the State Transport Authority and the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Limited on a fresh public interest petition seeking scrapping of the Capital’s 5.7-km-long BRT corridor between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand flyover in South Delhi. Issuing the notices, a Division Bench of Justice Pradeep Nandrajog and Justice Veena Birbal asked the respondents to file replies to the petition by April 18, the next date of hearing.

• Another elephant killed by speeding train

  Amid concern about animals being run over by speeding trains in forest areas, yet another elephant was killed and another injured when the Delhi-bound Jan Shatabdi express hit a herd of pachyderms in the district on Sunday morning. The incident occurred near Motichoor Fatak, about 50 kms from Dehra Dun. A group of eight elephants abruptly came on the tracks, SHO Manoj Singh Negi said. By the time the train had come to a halt, it had hit two elephants, killing one on the spot and leaving another injured, he said. The rest of the elephants fled into the nearby forests.

• Coal policy recast to aid projects nearing completion

  In an attempt to make power plants using imported coal viable, the government will recast its coal allocation policy to ensure that all such projects that have reached advanced levels of completion get up to 30% of their fuel requirements through indigenously produced coal. The move would benefit six power projects of Adani Power, JSW Steel, Coastal Energen, DCW and Ind Barath Power. The total capacity of these projects is about 4,650 MW and their combined coal requirement is roughly six million tonne.

• Panel to submit food Bill report on Jan 16

  Notwithstanding ‘serious differences’ among its members, a parliamentary panel reviewing the National Food Security Bill, 2011, will submit its report to the Lok Sabha Speaker on Wednesday. The government aims to introduce the Bill in the forthcoming Budget session of Parliament. FE had reported last month that the panel would submit its report by mid-January. The 31-member panel, chaired by Lok Sabha MP Vilas Muttemwar, had been examining the Bill since October last year. Flooded with around 1.5 lakh petitions as well as comments from state governments, experts and civil society groups, the panel had to hold daily meetings to finalise its report.

  Every time people lose faith in the political establishment, urban middle classes embrace fascism and the poor take up arms against the state The last image of 2012 is that of protesters storming central Delhi, outraged at the brutal rape of a young girl and the culture of violence against women. This outburst by the educated middle class, many of them young women, was spontaneous as much as it was leaderless. But as we move into the next year, we need to think about the government’s response to this protest and other demonstrations. We need to understand if the Indian state has any clue about what is going on under its nose — and feet.

• UN report on maladies of mine workers in state

  JAIPUR: The United Nations (UN) Human Rights report - 2012 gives an account of the unhealthy and exploitative conditions of mine workers in the state. Published by the working group on Human Rights in India and the UN (WGHR) for India's review at UN suggests that minimal wages, poor working conditions and lack of training are rampant in the mining sector in the state. In its study WGHR found that more than 95% of mining activities in the state fall in the domain of unorganized sector. Out of the total miners almost 37% are women and most of them are dalits or tribals. The most concerning revelation is about the health status of the mineworkers.

• An iron tablet a week can reduce anaemia prevalence in state

  JAIPUR: One tablet a week could decrease the prevalence of anaemia among adolescents in the state. These tablets would soon be distributed to school children from Class 6 to 12 in government schools. Medical health and family welfare department is likely to introduce the weekly iron and folic acid supplementation (WIFS) national programme for adolescents within seven days. The preparation for its launch is already complete. A meeting of all reproduction and child health officers was held in this regard on Friday.

When consumers call the Area Manager’s office they either get an engaged tone or are told that the telephone is temporarily out of order. But that is hardly their fault. It’s the entire system that is creaking. After the corporatisation process MeSEB became MeECL. The nomenclature changed but the Government continues to run the Corporation like a department and the Chief Secretary who is burdened with running the entire Secretariat is also expected to be the corporate wizard to turn the sick MeECL around.

• Govt hikes low-cost housing component in spl townships

  Shot in arm: Total FSI for saleable residential projects increased up to 1.7 Over six years after it introduced the Special Township Project (STP) scheme to promote self-sustainable micro-economic hubs in and around urban centres in Maharashtra, the state government on Sunday finalised several modifications to the existing policy. While the total FSI for saleable residential projects has been increased from 1 to a maximum of 1.7, the government has also increased the component of low-cost housing and the area that has to be reserved for economic activities within the township.

• As traditions are marked, air pollution levels soar

  Suspended particulate matter found above permissible limit at 15 monitored locations Residents across the city on Sunday felt the effects of pollution, with Bhogi fires burning across the city. At all 15 locations monitored by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, pollution levels were found above the permissible limit. Virugambakkam residents experienced the highest level of dust pollution on Bhogi day with the locality recording 389 microgram/cubic metre of respirable suspended particulate matter (RSPM). The permissible limit for RSPM is 100 microgram/cubic metre.

• Palike failed in waste management: Siddaiah

  The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) now has a clear roadmap for garbage management and the search for alternative landfills is only an immediate solution for the crisis, said BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah on Sunday. • Won’t burden the poor with power tariff hike: CM

  Hyderabad: Reacting for the first time on the discoms’ proposals for a massive power tariff hike, Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy said on Saturday that the government would not take any decision that would affect the poor. • UP asked why Hindon has shrunk

  NOIDA: The National Green Tribunal has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to clarify as to why the width of Hindon River has been reduced to just about 50 metres at the place where a pontoon bridge has been opened temporarily. The tribunal passed this direction while hearing a petition alleging the river has changed its course due to construction of a bridge over it near Raj Nagar in Ghaziabad. Environmental activists in Ghaziabad had alleged that debris was unabatedly dumped into the Hindon for construction of approach roads for the bridge despite a stay imposed by the tribunal in April 2012.
