14-hour power cut coupled with high cost of diesel takes a toll Unable to cope up with 14 hours of power cut a day and high cost of diesel to run generator sets, BHEL Small and Medium Industries’ Association (BHELSIA) has kept its options open on exploring alternative sources for power generation. The association intends to determine feasibility for establishing a 10 MW captive unit, or see if solar power generation will serve their requirement. For, at the prevailing cost of diesel, the units are unable to survive by running generator sets for backup power. The ancillaries are prepared to invest on generator sets, but are unable to meet the recurring cost towards fuel. However, the proposal for establishment of captive power plant will be pursued only in the long run.

To make monitoring of effluent discharge by dyeing units in Tirupur and Erode districts more effective, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) will have an online water quality monitoring system this year in the Noyyal river and Kalingarayan canal. The State government by deciding to provide electricity to farmers and power loom industry at low rates has tried to give them some relief. In a meeting of cabinet which was presided over by Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan the decision was taken that the domestic consumers using electricity up to 30 units monthly would be charged Rs 1.75 per unit in place of revised rates. The powerloom consumers having load up to 25 horse power would be provided electricity at Rs 2 per unit in place of revised rates. Low Tension agriculture consumers would also be provided electricity at low rates.
